Local B-School in Pittsburgh: Tepper School of Business | Carnegie Mellon

With quantitative reasoning and mathematical analysis at the core of its twenty distinct tracks, Carnegie Mellon is an IT stronghold. Students are able to mold their own curriculum to center around their specific areas of interest. The intensity of the program is said to be "grueling" but necessary to prepare students to excel at their careers.

Set in the old industrial city of Pittsburgh, Tepper seeks business school students whose backgrounds prove them to be genuinely good and hard-working people, the type you'd like to share an office with. In terms of getting into Tepper, just as for other schools, it is recommended that you learn as much as can about the school before applying. This allows you to be able to craft your application in such a way that an admissions committee is likely to interpret as a good match to the school. It also allows you to know early on whether the school will be able to adequately suit your needs.

The Tepper School of Management offers six unique concentrations or "tracks" for full-time MBA students. These tracks include Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship in Organizations, Financial Engineering, Investment Strategy, Management of Innovation & Product Development, and Technology Leadership. In addition to these six tracks, students can also choose from several dual and joint degree programs. Dual degree options include Law & MBA and Software Engineering & MBA. Some Tepper students may choose to attain a more basic MBA, concentrating in Accounting or Finance, while other students may pursue a more localized study in Non-Profit Management/Public Administration or Entrepreneurship. The campus houses a diverse range of research centers which students actively utilize to facilitate their academic pursuits.

Average Work Experience

Most successful applicants for the entering class have between 4 and 5 years of full-time work experience on their resumes. Carnegie Mellon is one of many top MBA programs that consider real life experience to be one of the top admissions factors.

The school’s emphasis on analytical abilities is apparent in its core curriculum. Required courses in Probability, Statistics, and Operations Management have the usual dose of quantitative lessons. But classes such as Financial Accounting and Managerial Economics also have a stronger analytical bent then you might find at other top schools.

'Mini Semesters'

A "mini" semester is half the length of a standard semester, and a Tepper year is comprised of four. Don't let the name fool you; these "mini" or "power" semesters are the equivalent of a single semester's worth of coursework, which means ten full courses before winter break. During the second year, students utilize these "mini" semesters to explore electives and work on specialized projects.
