University of Michigan Ross School of Business Overview

The rigor of first year core classes enables students to build a firm foundation for second year when they are given the freedom to tackle and explore areas of interest. It is not required for students to focus in a particular field so students may mold their own academic experience.

Entrepreneurship is an evolving field of Interest at Ross. Students with goals of starting up their own business can take advantage of the resources offered at the Samuel Zell-Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies.

The Ross School of Business requires all full-time MBA students to take a World Economy course, in addition to a Law & Ethics Course. The first year of study has been designed to expose students to Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and many other areas of business management.

 

MBA Application Elements - Ross Business School

The middle 80% of admitted full-time students for the class of 2014 scored between 650-750. The average score of admitted full-time students was 703.

Interviews are given by invitation only. Given Ross' focus on professional experience, it is not surprising to see that accepted students have an average of five years of work experience. This should not discourage applicants with less professional work experience, but recognize that Ross will especially want to know how you can contribute to the program if you have less than three years of work experience. Applicants should anticipate being questioned on this point during the interview. Also, Ross is interested in students who see the benefits of this program. Candidates should demonstrate their knowledge of of the program and their passion for studies at Ross during their interview.

The UMBS application process allows for ample opportunity to discuss innovative entrepreneurial ideas, and those opportunities should be capitalized on. That is not to say that all applicants should be aspiring entrepreneurs, but to the extent that you can display entrepreneurial spirit, do so. The Admissions Committee will certainly take notice of your interest in entrepreneurship, and will hopefully recognize your ability to augment the UMBS brand. Being recognized as a potential brand builder is a great way to move your application into the "yes" pile. Providing one or two examples of your teamwork capabilities should also go a long way toward establishing fit with the program.

  • Briefly describe your short-term and long-term career goals. Why is an MBA the best choice at this point in your career? What and/or who influenced your decision to apply to Ross? (500 Words Max)
  • Describe your most significant professional accomplishment. Elaborate on the leadership skills you displayed, the actions you took, and the impact you had on the organization. (500 Words Max)
  • If you were not pursuing the career goals you described in Question #1, what profession would you pursue instead? (For example: teacher, musician, athlete, architect, etc.) How would this alternate interest contribute to your effectiveness in solving multidisciplinary problems? (300 Words Max)
  • Describe your experience during a challenging time in your life. Explain how you grew personally, either despite this challenge or because of it. (300 Words Max)
  • Optional Essay: Is there anything else you think the Admissions Committee should know about you to evaluate your candidacy?

Two letters of recommendation are required, and they should preferably be written by individuals who have worked with you in a professional setting. For candidates who have been out of school for more than two years, academic references are not recommended.
